On Religion and tolerance, I write thus…..
Religion they say is the opium of the people, but if it must be taken, let the prescription of the manufacturer be adhered to. Too much of everything is said to be bad. So also is fanaticism of any kind.
I am not an Islamic scholar, neither do I profess to know the Bible inside out, but one thing I am sure of is my kindergarten knowledge of both religions.
Christianity is a religion that encourages the belief that there is only one God. Christianity is based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, ultimately making man realize the sole purpose of his existence is to serve God. In a nutshell, Christianity is a relationship with God almighty and it also allows you to make a choice to follow or not.
The word Islam means voluntary “Submission” or “Surrender” to the Will of God. It derives from the root word “salam” meaning peace. In the Qur’an, God through His prophet defines that the only purpose for which He created mankind is to Worship Him. Islam recognizes that humankind has free choice in whether to obey or disobey God, but ultimately we will be held accountable to God in the next life for the choices that we make in this life.
Without having to compare the last two paragraphs, I am sure we can spot more similarities than differences already; I am not debating this please!
I write these lines as an appeal to those who attack either religion with lack of understanding. We must dissect meaningful information from the avalanche of news that comes at us per second, especially with the various media available (Radio, TV, Cable, Social Media, Gossips, etc). Those of us that post these materials must of necessity realize the maturity of our audience as well as their tolerance level. Sensitive materials that bother on beliefs, more especially religious should be posted with caution.
Most people can see beyond the religion and appreciate the humour, education, and the lesson intended to be learnt, but other less tolerant will take offense or see opportunity to dip their claws in. Such is the beginning of hatred, wars, frictions and misgivings.
Guys, I beg for tolerance. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
To all I say, Shalom and Salam!
